  • Man this is embarrassing… sometimes I find myself thinking how Australians can be so racist & blind 😳 this attempt to the integrity of all the people (backpackers) who have been in Byron bay past, present and future who have supported local businesses, giving a helping hand to the community, paying tax ect. Then you guys have the audacity to say this about only “LOCALS ONLY” Also another thing if you want to talk about “locals only” Byron Shire Council recognises the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Arakwal people, the Minjungbal people and the Widjabul people as Traditional Owners and custodians for parts of the Byron Shire so please think again when you say “locals only”. It doesn’t make you a local cause you’ve been here since the 80s the real locals are the indigenous people of this land. 🖤💛❤️ All I can hope for is that the new generation aren’t so ignorant as you oldies… peace out rabbits ✌🏽

  • We would like to express our heartfelt condolences on the passing of local resident John 'Strop' Cornell, previous owner of the Beach Hotel and producer of Crocodile Dundee, who has died at his home in Byron Bay surrounded by his wife Delvene Delaney and family ❤️ John and Delvene generously supported many local organisations including the Byron Community Centre. The Cornell family were pivotal in the opening of the Byron Theatre which acts as a social enterprise to support services and programs for our community's most vulnerable. We are so thankful for John and Delvene's support of the Byron Community Centre and Byron Theatre which has truly made a difference 🙏 "A classic Australian character, John Cornell made the lives he touched much richer, not only through donations, but also through his generosity of spirit, humour, humility and honour. A true egalitarian, John sought equity and equality, and fought for a fair go." - Cornell family statement Our hearts go out to Delve

  • The 31st of May marks two years since Theo Hayez went missing. The Belgian backpacker was asked to leave Cheeky Monkeys around 11pm on what was noted as one of the coldest and darkest nights of 2019, his life forever changed by turning left and not right. He went the wrong way home, and wasn’t seen again. He was just 18. Somehow this sweet fresh-faced boy is gone. Gone on our watch. Missing from a town where everyone wants to be. What happened on that dark night? It’s a shadow that lurks in our town. We lost a boy. We lost a boy who belonged to a family that loved him. I wonder what it is to have a child missing? How do you move on? How do you mark the moments of your grief when you don’t know what happened? How do you bury hope? This morning I woke thinking of Theo and his parents and their insurmountable loss. I thought of his father having to travel to a strange land, to a tiny town on the coast of Australia, to retrace the steps of his beloved boy. What did it feel like to b

This October, Bluesfest will be the first major festival to return, since COVID-19 struck, with a multi-day, multi-stage, camping event and almost all the artists due to play at Easter will return to play. We are thrilled to announce that @MidnightOilBand has agreed to join our All-Australian Lineup, headlining our opening Friday night along with the launch of their new album – it’s a dream come true. @PaulKelly will co-headline Saturday night alongside @TashSultanaOfficial... and of course, @JimmyBarne

  • You can’t keep a good festival down. Just seven weeks after Byron Bluesfest was cancelled at the eleventh hour owing to a COVID scare, the event has bounced back with a new line-up featuring some of Australia’s most revered musical talent. The October long weekend will see music legends Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly and Jimmy Barnes grace the stages at the Tyagarah site, alongside emerging legend Tash Sultana, and local favourites Ocean Alley (see full lineup below). ‘Who would have thought that just six weeks after the cancellation of Bluesfest last Easter by a Public Health Order less than 24 hours before our gates were due to open we would be announcing our re-scheduled festival, and a week later, today, our artists,’ festival director, Peter Noble said. Midnight Oil are making their first appearance at Bluesfest in 19 years. ‘This is so special for me to announce – a moment I have been waiting years to happen,’ Mr Noble said. ‘Midnight Oil headlined Bluesfest in 20

  • Following yesterday's announcement of a trial, Sunday CBD partial closure to vehicular traffic - this is Byron Shire Council's current plan for a permanent, Community Markets location. Illustrated below, closure area expected to be from 6am to 6pm. Remember - this market is not only held on the first Sunday of the month, there are extra and similar markets held throughout the year, some held on a Saturday. (Not the Twilight Market - these are additional markets.) It's not yet clear if they would be held here too - but it's likely. At this time, the EPA are investigating Butler Street Reserve's toxic groundwater run off. Market Stallholders do not wish to return the site. For those new to the area - Butler Street Reserve was formerly used as an unlicensed landfill up until the mid-1970s and according to the EPA, is considered a legacy contaminated site. • Fire & Rescue NSW is always busy and the nation-wide fires in recent years have highlighted the importance and value of our firefighters. The Byron Bay Fire Station has seen a very busy start to the careers of their new recruits. Within days of returning from her initial training, Briony Fisher, attended two house fires in Byron Bay. Deputy Captain Matt Crisp said that firefighters were able to extinguish the fires relatively quickly but were shocked that neither home had a working smoke alarm. ‘It was just pure luck that one resident woke up in time to escape,’ he said. ‘She escaped with minor smoke inhalation and shock.’ Deputy Captain Crisp says that smoke inhalation is the big killer in house fires. ‘When you are asleep you will not smell the smoke, and a fire can become unsurvivable in just three minutes. Working smoke alarms and an escape plan greatly increase your chances of getting out safely.’ The smoke alarm message loud and clear on the side of the local fi

  • Byron Council has taken a further step toward getting cars out of, and pedestrians into, the centre of Byron, by voting to introduce car-free Sundays. Designed to replicate the success of the town’s New Years Eve celebration – Soul Street – the move will see part of Jonson Street and some other adjoining streets closed to cars for one Sunday a month. Revellers enjoying last year’s Soul Street celebration in Byron Bay. Image: Richard Jeans ‘The time is definitely now,’ independent councillor Cate Coorey said in moving the motion at the last full Council meeting. ‘We have, as a Council, delivered the means by which a car-free town centre is possible: a road that bypasses the town centre, and new and improved cycleways. ‘There should be no need here to explain why this is a good idea – we have been working towards getting cars out and people in for years and it is a main tenet of the Byron Town Centre Masterplan. ‘I feel that a car-free Sunday is a good way to

  • John Shipton, father of detained WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, is due to speak in the Byron Shire again this week. Mr Assange and his family have close connections to the Northern Rivers, with the acclaimed journalist having spent part of his childhood in the hinterland. His father has dedicated much of the past decade to fighting for Mr Assange’s freedom and has spoken as part of sell-out public forums in the Byron Shire at least three times, with support from independent local media organisations The Echo and Bay FM community radio. This May, Mr Shipton is on tour down the east coast again and started with a public address in the Nimbin Town Hall as part of MardiGrass festivities. Mr Shipton spoke in Brisbane on World Press Freedom Day (May 3) and marched with the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance on behalf of his son, a Queensland-born member of the MEAA, before addressing a rally in West End. Northern Rivers residents can hear Mr Shipton in person at the Courthouse

  • Byron Shire Mayor, Simon Richardson, has resigned effective 30 April, 2021 following 13 years as a councillor, the last nine as mayor. He made his announcement on his social media page on Thursday, 22 April reflecting on the ‘tough personal journey for me during this term’ dealing with both acute anxiety and the death of his wife Jane, which left him as the sole parent to his two young daughters. Referring to the Council he joined, and later became mayor of, he stated that it was an ‘organisation that was at war with itself, broke and with no staff appetite to take risks in fear of being shot down and very low morale. We also had councillors at war, where it was seen as natural to attack and bully each other. And lastly, we had a community that largely took sides, dug trenches and attacked each [other,] where civil discourse was largely absent and only the loud voices were heard. To my regret, in my first term when solely a councillor, I was a willing participant within these

  • It's called Christmas Island for a reason. Televangelist Scott Morrison has once again reaffirmed his position that there should be no separation between Pentecostal church and state while doing his campaign tour of churches this week. During an event speaking at the Christian Conference on the Gold Coast, the PM made the claim that ‘Australia needs more Jesus’, which he later clarified as meaning ‘Australia needs more refugees locked up in detention’. “How great is Jesus? He was a poor middle eastern refugee, born to a single mother out of wedlock, raised to be a carpenter, called for everyone to respect the planet, pushed a socialist agenda, believed sex workers deserve respect and was against discrimination. He has a real impact on how I write policy, minus all that stuff. He is the only moral compass around, and he should be brought into our homes. Not literally obviously, he should be brought to an offshore prison the dirty criminal. What if he is from ISIS? We can’t

  • A singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, based in Sandy Beach, New South Wales. Chris Aronsten plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, and spoons .There is no shortage of energy in his solo performance. A typical concert includes original songs and selected covers from his extensive Folk and Blues repertoire, played on the various instruments. He blends the songs with fiddle tunes, American-style bluegrass flat-picking on guitar, and instrumentals on mandolin. Chris has appeared at the Warwick Folk Festival and the Broadstairs Folk Week in Kent in the U.K., and back in Australia at the Maldon Folk Festival and the National Folk Festival in Canberra. Aronsten did two Australian tours with Maddy Prior and has supported Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, Bert Jansch, Christy Moore, Seamus Begley and Jim Murray, Lunasa and Fairport Convention.

94 GQ Patrol RX 4.2 petrol/lpg 3 inch Dobson lift and 33 inch tyres. Basically no rust, has been living inland up until recently. Used as a camping/touring vehicle. Camping box built in back and has had a new head put on engine mid 2020. New radiator, fan, battery and cooling system and brakes all done in the last 16 months. Body and chassis straight and hasn’t been in any accidents in pretty good nick for its age. Transmission has started to slip will need this replaced at some stage and is only running on gas, will need the fuel pump looked at. Would be a great vehicle for someone looking to put some time into it for a 4WD build.

  • In light of the attention Byron Bay has been receiving lately regarding the problems a certain Netflix show may bring with it, I feel it's the perfect time to solve this Byron Bay brand issue that's causing so much grief. Byron has always been a beautiful place to live and now we as locals are suffering the consequences of living somewhere highly desirable. The town has undergone a massive shift from accessible long-term rentals to now rampant and unregulated holiday letting. We've seen unreasonable rent hikes and families born and raised in Byron forced out of the area to accommodate more tourists. I say we take the initiative while the international spotlight is on Byron Bay and take back ownership of the Byron Bay brand. Now is the time to reintroduce commercial whaling to the town. Now hear me out... Whaling is obviously repugnant and I have no desire to see any harm to any wildlife. But what if we used this horrid association to dampen the flames of rampant tourism and predator

  • POSSIBLE LOW – HEAVY RAIN, POSSIBLE FLOODING, STRONG WINDS AND LARGE WAVES - MON/TUES/WED • A low pressure system is expected to develop near the Queensland coast on Sunday and then track south to southeast on Monday to Wednesday, possibly close to the northern NSW coast. • This system has the potential to bring moderate to heavy rain to the northeast of the state, as well as strong and gusty winds and large waves to coastal areas from Monday. Fresh to strong winds may also affect parts of the central and northern ranges. • Adverse conditions may extend to parts of the northern inland on Monday and then south along coastal parts on Tuesday and Wednesday as the low moves south. However, conditions should ease as the low weakens and moves further offshore during Wednesday. • As catchments along the northern half of the coast are relatively wet from recent rainfall and flooding, there is potential for flash flooding and renewed riverine flooding or river rises with this

  • Big Tech has thrown down its first big salvo against the federal governments’ proposed News Media Bargaining Code. This morning, Facebook took a heavy handed approach in response to the Australian governments’ proposed law (The News Media Bargaining Code) that would force them, and other big tech companies like Google to pay a substantial amount for showing news headlines and images. As of this morning, Facebook has removed all news related articles from any and all AU news outlets. The net was cast very wide, affecting a large number of smaller media pages, as well as the major players targeted by Facebook. Even parody news pages such as The Betoota Advocate were affected (thankfully, many these ones have been remedied). Facebook’s position is that Emergency Information from News platforms will still be displayed, although how this information will rank in the Facebook feed algorithm in the future remains to be seen. • Hi guys, my names Max and I'm the idiot who got his bike stolen last night in town while I was working. The bike was stolen in the car park area underneath the Bolthole bar, 9 Fletcher st. The bikes' name is Melanie, shes big and orange, sticks out like a sore thumb and means a lot to me. I cycled reaaaaaaaally far on her and would like the twat who nicked it to give it back. Thankfully there are 6 cameras in the car park so we will have snaps of the person and will be handing the footage in to police promptly unleeeeeesss.... If anyone sees or knows anything please please please get in touch either through facebook or phoning 0426803752, I'm offering 500 bucks for anyone to return it or has information that leads her coming back to me, no questions asked! Anyway, heres a few wee snaps of her for your eyes to gander. Cheers!

From a happy (relatively newish) Australian that recognises the past, it is a privilege to call this place my home; it is a uniquely special place. 🇦🇺 Peace and Love ❤️ P.s. and we really should change the date, celebrating “terra nullius” is kinda f’d up.

Inspired by the work of acts such as the Who and Hüsker Dü, Press Club are a four-piece alt-rock/punk outfit from Melbourne, Australia. Formed in 2016, the band quickly became known on the local scene for their loud and brash songs such as "Suburbia" and "Headwreck." Made up of vocalist Natalie Foster, guitarist Greg Rietwyk, bass guitarist Rufio MacRae, and drummer Frank Lees, the group came together out of the ashes of former bands. They spent 2017 writing material and performing throughout Melbourne, earning an ever-burgeoning and committed fan base. In 2018, their single "Suburbia" caught the attention of several Australian radio stations and the band were subsequently picked to perform at the NYE on the Hill and Falls festivals. Mid-2018 saw the group record and produce their debut album in their native Brunswick. • The market has been running since 1999, it is uniquely run by the market stallholders who hold their market meeting every first tuesday of the month. Come and enjoy the atmosphere — this toddler/child-friendly market not only supplies you with the freshest vegetables you are likely to find anywhere (except from your own garden), you can also get growing tips as you do your shopping. We are committed to providing local organic produce, reducing our carbon footprint. Our stallholders have travelled an average of 20kms rather than at least 1000kms you would expect from most supermarket produce. Russell Scott cooks his fabulous south Indian Samosa Dosas and Ali supplies a great variety of hot beverages including a great coffee to accompany her delicious cakes. To accompany us all, Bob Oort picks and strums perfectly on his classical guitar. If you haven't attended the markets yet, make sure you get there soon and join in!

The Byron Flea is a monthly event not to be missed attracting an eclectic bunch of locals and travelers selling art, second-hand goods, as well as creative enterprise and locally made food. Set in a beautiful riverside location just metres from New Brighton’s pristine surfing beaches, the market is a meeting place for the area’s arts-loving community, who come to shop, socialise, chat with the growers and soak up the laid-back North Coast lifestyle. The market is home to more than 30 farmers and food producers who offer the region’s best and freshest produce: seasonal fruit and vegetables, sourdough bread, eggs, milk, cheeses, tempeh, macadamias, olives, spices, coffee, honey and more. Relax at a shady table with a cup of freshly brewed local coffee, or enjoy a delicious breakfast prepared with fresh seasonal produce. There’s live music each week, along with regular workshops, cooking demonstrations and the Kiddies Plot; a weekly kids space with free art and craft activities. The produce is fresher, and more delicious! This Farmers Market has a variety of stalls, some of which are organic, and other which are conventional local producers. The Byron Farmers Market Association (who also run the Bangalow Farmers Market, which takes place Saturday mornings from 8am until 11am) work closely along side farmers and producers to ensure the that products are sold for a fair price, while still maintaining a sustainable business venture for stall owners. The Market began in 2004, and is still a popular place for people to pick up their weekly fruit and veg. The Bangalow Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday morning from 8am until 11am. It is located at 1 Byron Street (in the Bangalow Hotel car park), right in the town of Bangalow. Although this is a fairly small Farmers’ Market, it has everything you need to stock up your pantry with local produce. You will find a range of organic fruit that is grown locally, fresh vegetables that change with the season, as well as baked goods, bread, preserves, and nuts. Byron Bay's Community Market, held at the Butler Street reserve, is one of the best in the region. Covering several acres, the market offers a vast array of handcrafted wares, locally-grown produce, and artworks of every kind. It's best to get there early and allow a few hours to take in all the stalls, indulge in some fresh food and culture. Stallholders, in their eye-catching colourful splendour, are a spectacle in themselves. Rainbows, sparkles and angel wings seem to be the 'uniform', making you feel as if you truly are in a magical world.

The whole town has a classic family holiday feel, as it is a great spot for fishing, picnics, swimming in the river, and eating fish and chips. The pristine Brunswick River makes for an incredibly scenic backdrop to the many cafes, restaurants, playgrounds, and shops, and, of course, to the markets. From about 7am, the Brunswick markets, located in Memorial Park, come alive with the many artisan stalls, which provide clothing, plants, food, candles, soaps, coffee, and more. The products found at the Brunswick Heads Markets are a mix of locally made and imported goods. The delicious hot food is not to be missed. You can also pick up a few fresh groceries. Many locals also hold garage sales on market day too, so there are many bargains to be found. Parking is available free of charge throughout the town, which is at easy walking

It explores wild salmon’s slide toward extinction, threats posed by fish hatcheries and fish farms, and our continued loss of faith in nature. Closer to home, Tasmania‘s marine environments have also been significantly impacted by industrial salmon farming. Now these farms are setting their sights on King Island – close to the world-class waves of Martha Lavinia Beach-and unwittingly picking a fight with surfers worldwide. Our film Saving Martha looks at the issue of Fish Farming that is impacting wild fish locally. Jonathan Taggart and Phillip Vannini spent two years travelling across Canada to find 200 off-gridders and visit them in their homes. Next On: Thursday, 27 June 2019 - 8:00am The Byron Farmers’ Market, which began in 2002, is one of the most popular in the area. They are held every Thursday morning, beginning at 8:00am and finishing up around 11:00am. The markets are held on the Butler Street Reserve. The Byron Bay Farmers’ Market loves supporting local producers. Purchasing food that is locally grown means that the produce does not have to be transported long distances. The produce is fresher, and more delicious! This Farmers’ Market has a variety of stalls, some of which are organic, and other which are conventional local producers. The Byron Farmers’ Market Association (who also run the Bangalow Farmers’ Market, which takes place Saturday mornings from 8am until 11am) work closely along side farmers and producers to ensure the that products are sold for a fair price, while still maintaining a sustainable business venture for stall owners. The great thing about shopping at the Byron Bay Farmer

  • Hi guys, we really need your help! My friend is travelling alone in Australia and it's been 7 days since anyone has heard from him. He was last seen last Friday (May 31) in Byron Bay at the Cheeky Monkey bar, and was supposed to be on his way to Melbourne by now before returning to Belgium in a week. His name is Théo Hayez and he is 18 years old. He was staying at the Wake up backpackers. If anyone has any information please reach out. If you could also share this post as much as possible it'd be greatly appreciated!

  • SHARK ALERT - TIME TO GET OUT OF THE WATER - Surf lifesavers have cleared the water at Ballina after the Department of Primary Industries helicopter spotted as many as 60 bull sharks in the water off the tip of North Wall just after 8am TODAY. Ballina Shire Council says the beaches remain open at this stage as there has not been an incident, but the DPI is monitoring the situation and surf life savers are in the area letting beach goers know of the sharks' presence. Data from a Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW) drone trial has revealed January to be the most significant month for shark activity and the north coast to be the state's shark hotspot. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-06-09/drone-data-from-popular-nsw-beaches-reveals-shark-hotspots/11189244

  • Police have received a report of a person being bitten by a shark at Lennox Head Beach about 1pm today. Police and ambulance responded to the incident, but the victim was taken to hospital by someone else. At this stage I have no details at all on the victim or type of shark, but the injury at this stage appears to be minor. I would suggest you stay out of the water for a while.

Gavin Doniger has been on the east coast music scene since picking up a guitar and hitting the road back in 1998. Since then he has toured continuously throughout Australia, and the world, collecting more foreign stamps in his passport than many bona fide diplomats. It is Doniger’s love for the open road that inspires his music, and this is especially true for his main project, Mescalito Blues, which consists of Doniger and any number of talented musicians that Doniger discovers in his travels. Fast building a reputation for blazing live shows that resonate with audiences from all walks of life, Gavin Doniger and his Mescalito Blues are as comfortable playing intimate shows to blues aficionados as they are a room full of rambunctious backpackers–and it is with this uncanny ability to engage and seduce audiences that Doniger and his companions are famous at home, and abroad.

Performance Surfboard Classic vintage board shapped by Tony Mcdonagh (classic well respected Ozzie shapper who shapped for Fluid foils and Shane surfboards). Has been restored to perfection..great shape and rips !!!! Board has yellowed but no sinkage..all dings professionally fixed Not sure of dimensions..id say around 6'4" to 6"6"..not sure of width or thickness. You know the board is insane when you put under your arms. Perfect for a museum or wall of the office or beach house and it's fully surfable to boot!

Selling my beautiful car, Audrey. I haven‘t had her very long but am looking to sell for the right price as I’m moving away and circumstances have changed! She’s done only 106,000 kms, person before my put all 4 new tyres on. Rust proof body. I’ve had a new battery in and brake pads! Also new radiator as last one cracked! Nothing else wrong, there is one scrape mark on the front from previous owner, transmission stick is a little loose but doesn’t affect driving. Very good condition for its age! Rego is for a full year! So expires next February! Considering this I am looking for $4,200 ono! Please message me
